Nourishing Your Recovery: Healthy Soft Foods After Oral Surgery

After an extensive or invasive oral procedure, your surgical team may recommend that you eat a soft food diet for at least a few days. This can help keep you comfortable, protect the treatment area, and lower the chance of post-op complications. A few sweet treats are understandable during recovery — ice cream has its place! Still, your body also needs nutrients to heal well and help you feel your best. Which healthy soft foods are good choices after oral surgery? Consider the following ideas:

Brothy or Blended Soups

Soup can be especially soothing when your mouth feels sore and heavier meals do not sound appealing. Light broths, such as chicken or vegetable broth, are gentle options that can also help you stay hydrated. For something more filling, try smooth blended soups like tomato, butternut squash, potato, or lentil. Let your soup cool slightly before eating it, since very hot foods may bother healing tissues. It is also best to skip crunchy garnishes, tough meat, seeds, and crunchy vegetables.

Mashed Foods

Mashed foods are simple to prepare and satisfying without requiring much chewing. Mashed potatoes are always a dependable choice, but you might also enjoy mashed sweet potatoes, avocado, bananas, beans, peas, carrots, or cauliflower. To increase protein, add Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, soft cheese, or a small amount of smooth nut butter if it fits your diet. Aim for a creamy texture with no lumps. If anything feels too dense, loosen it with milk, broth, or water until it is comfortable to swallow.

Smoothies or Protein Drinks

Smoothies and protein drinks may be helpful when your appetite is limited or chewing still feels uncomfortable. Blend together yogurt, milk, protein powder, soft fruit, avocado, or nut butter for a drink that offers a mix of nutrients. Spinach or oats can also be added as long as your blender makes the texture completely smooth. Also, keep in mind that you should enjoy these drinks by sipping directly from the cup or using a spoon; drinking through a straw can cause post-op complications in some cases.

Other Soft Food Ideas

As your mouth becomes less tender, you may be able to work additional soft, nutrient-rich foods into your routine. Moist scrambled eggs can be a gentle way to get protein. Tender boneless fish, meatloaf, soft tofu, well-cooked pasta, oatmeal, cottage cheese, refried beans, and soft-cooked vegetables may also be good choices. Cut foods into small bites and, when possible, chew on the side away from the surgical site. Continue to avoid crunchy, sticky, spicy, and hard foods until your dental team clears you to resume your usual diet or you feel fully healed.

Eating soft foods during recovery does not have to feel boring or limiting. With a little planning, your meals can be both comforting and nourishing.
