All-on-4 dental implants offer an efficient, reliable, and strong way to replace a full arch of missing teeth. However, getting them requires that you undergo a surgical procedure. It is understandable if you have questions about what to expect as your body recovers. This blog post helps you have a realistic view of the road ahead.

Typical Recovery Timeline

Healing after All-on-4 surgery is a little different for everyone. Your overall health, the details of your treatment plan, and your commitment to your dentist’s aftercare directions can all influence your experience. For many patients, though, recovery follows a pattern similar to this:

  • During the first 48 – 72 hours, some soreness, swelling, and tenderness are normal. Severe pain is not expected, but this early stage is often when patients feel the most uncomfortable.
  • After the first few days, swelling and discomfort should begin to improve. If your work is not physically demanding, you may be able to resume your job and slowly return to your regular schedule.
  • Within 7 – 14 days, many patients feel much better and are able to participate in most of their everyday activities again.
  • After 3 – 6 months, the implants should be firmly integrated with your jawbone. At that point, your dental team may be ready to exchange your temporary All-on-4 denture for your final one.

How to Support a Smooth Recovery

Your care team will provide detailed post-op instructions to help you heal and avoid complications. Their directions might include advice such as:

  • Spend the first day or two resting with your head elevated to help minimize swelling.
  • Apply cold compresses according to your oral surgeon’s directions to ease swelling and soreness.
  • Stick with soft, nutritious options, such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and warm — not hot — brothy soups.
  • Clean your mouth using the hygiene routine your care team recommends. Be careful when you clean around the surgical sites, but do not neglect them.
  • Take any prescribed or recommended pain medication exactly as directed.
  • Do not smoke, chew tobacco, or drink alcohol.

Signs You Should Call Your Oral Surgeon

Some discomfort is expected after All-on-4 surgery, but a few symptoms may indicate that you need professional attention. Contact your care team promptly if:

  • Your pain worsens or does not begin to improve after several days.
  • You notice a fever or possible signs of infection, such as pus or a lingering bad taste.
  • Your temporary denture is negatively affecting your bite.
  • You experience other issues that are unusual or uncomfortable.

If you are unsure whether a symptom is normal, it is always okay to ask! Your dentist would rather answer your questions than have you worry or accidentally delay necessary care during your recovery.

Healing from All-on-4 surgery is often more manageable than most patients anticipate! If you follow post-op instructions, you can expect the experience to go smoothly.
