Your Simple Guide to Eating after Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Getting your wisdom teeth removed can be important for your oral and overall health, but the procedure does come with a bit of a recovery period. During that time, you will have to make some adjustments to your eating habits. Doing so will increase your comfort and lower your risk of painful complications, such as dry socket. What foods should you eat, and which ones should you avoid? This guide provides practical advice.

What to Eat

Your mouth will be sore after your procedure, and you may experience some swelling and intermittent bleeding, especially during the first few days of your recovery. It is important that you eat nutritious foods that will not irritate your sensitive oral tissues. To that end, focus on soft items that require little to no chewing. Here are some examples:

  • Yogurt
  • Applesauce
  • Thin soups
  • Meal replacement shakes
  • Ice cream (in moderation)
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Avocados
  • Oatmeal
  • Cottage cheese
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Smoothies (without seeds)

What to Avoid

It is important to avoid hard, crunchy, and tough foods. These items can worsen soreness and might even dislodge the blood clot at your surgical sites (drinking through a straw could do the same thing, so be careful!). Here are some examples of foods that you will need to temporarily say no to:

  • Tough meats
  • Chips and crackers
  • Hard candies
  • Raw and crunchy vegetables
  • Popcorn
  • Spicy and highly acidic foods

Also, keep in mind that you should avoid hot foods and beverages, particularly while your mouth is still numb from anesthesia. You might accidentally burn yourself! Your oral surgeon may advise you to avoid coffee as well. Not only is it hot, but the caffeine content may increase the risk of bleeding.

When Can You Return to a Normal Diet?

People recover at different rates, but most patients feel well enough to resume a normal diet within two weeks of their surgery. Some people even start eating their favorite foods within just 7 – 10 days.

The key is to listen to your body and be patient. If you try out a particular food and find that consuming it is uncomfortable, wait a few days until you try again. Soon, you should be back to enjoying a wide variety of tasty snacks and meals!
