Factors that Affect the Surgery’s Duration
There is no foolproof way to predict how long your surgery will take. Your care team will set aside a certain amount of time in their schedule based on a variety of factors, including:
- The number of implants you need: If you are replacing just one tooth with a single implant, your surgery will likely be relatively short. Logically, multiple implants require more time. (On average, each implant requires 30 – 60 minutes to place.)
- The need for extractions: Some patients undergo tooth extractions and dental implant placement during the same appointment. Combining these services can extend your time in the treatment chair.
- Your surgeon’s skill and experience: If your surgeon frequently places dental implants and has advanced technology to help, that can speed up the process.
- The use of sedation: Your care team may be able to work more efficiently ifs you are sedated and not just under local anesthesia.
- Your unique mouth: Certain anatomical features may cause your care team to work a bit more slowly.
Planning for Your Surgery
It is safe to set aside a whole day for your surgery. Even if your appointment lasts just an hour or two, you should clear the remainder of the day to rest and start your recovery.
Also, keep in mind that you should be comfortable during your procedure, no matter how long it takes. Thanks to sedation and local anesthesia, you may feel little to nothing as your surgical team works. After the sedation and anesthesia wear off, some soreness will set in. Pain medication, rest, and a soft diet can help. Most people are able to return to work within just a few days or less.
